The first Internet property listing
A Twitter challenge ...
By Inman News, Wednesday, October 14, 2009.
Flickr photo by mrbill.Who was the first person to post a for-sale home listing on the Internet?
Inman News Publisher Brad Inman (@BradInman) posed the question in a Twitter post (click to read) today.
If you know who it is, tell us. We would like to profile this individual and learn about the inspiration for this first-ever feat. (And did the home sell?)

Do you mean "Who was the first person to post a for-sale home listing on the WEB?" The Internet has been around a long time, and before the web there were other forums for sharing info on the Internet... (Think Usenet and university profs exchanging listing information with their peers via U email accounts.)

I advertised my services in Orange County, CA on Compuserve in 1997, and a buyer from Chicago responded. So I met my first web client then. I remember he did buy a nice house from me, and it was a very smooth transaction! Everyone at my office thought it was a fluke, because "the whole internet thing was just a fad!"

As a web development company just starting in 1995, we had a couple real estate clients that had us redesign their sites developed in 1996 and they were having success with web based advertising and sales. I am sure they were not the first and would assume it started much earlier than 1996.

I found an old press release from Coldwell Banker claiming to be the first national real estate firm to create its own Internet web site in 1995, though I imagine the web was scattered with smaller individual agent sites prior to that time.
I found the actual press release and wrote more about this on 360Digest: http://360digest.com/2009/01/02/wayback-machine/

For some reason the "Filtered Link" option did not work. To read the original post and press release please visit: http://360digest.com/2009/01/02/wayback-machine/
If that link still doesn't work, please copy and past the link in your browser.
